Comparative life cycle assessment of marine microalgae, Nannochloropsis sp. and fishmeal for sustainable protein ingredients in aquaculture feeds

چکیده
Fishmeal from small marine pelagic fishes reduces their availability for wildlife forage and artisanal fishing catches that support food security in lower income coastal nations. is primarily used feeds aquaculture, the world’s fastest-growing sector. Replacing fishmeal aquafeeds with more environmentally responsible alternative ingredients can help feed aquaculture transition to sustainable production methods. Protein defatted microalga, Nannochloropsis sp., produced alongside polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) nutraceutical market lacks a comprehensive open-access analysis of environmental impacts producing these products biorefineries. This study compared life cycle (global warming potential, water use, land eutrophication freshwater biotic resource use) protein fish biorefinery meal. We conducted an attributional assessment using primary data provided by Cellana LLC model biomass cultivation harvesting at Kona Demonstration Facility (Hawaii, USA) literature downstream processing into high-protein replacement aquafeed concentrated PUFAs market. Material energy inputs included 2 scenarios (wet dry biomass) oil extraction (i.e., fractionation concentration PUFAs): solvents or supercritical carbon dioxide. Results were processes had largest overall effect all scenarios; urea pure liquid dioxide hot spots; scenario involving followed solvent significantly than global but not use. These results suggest microalgae be if high-value metabolites are coproduced biorefinery.

shores. Aquaculture—the farming of fish, shellfish, or aquatic plants—has grown rapidly over the past several decades, and that growth is accelerating. Today, some 4,000 aquaculture enterprises in the United States, most of them small to mid-size, supply Americans with Atlantic salmon, hard clams, oysters, shrimp, and nearly all the catfish and trout we eat. As the industry matures, it holds bo...
متن کاملMeasuring the potential for sustainable intensification of aquaculture in Bangladesh using life cycle assessment
Food production is a major driver of global environmental change and the overshoot of planetary sustainability boundaries. Greater affluence in developing nations and human population growth are also increasing demand for all foods, and for animal proteins in particular. Consequently, a growing body of literature calls for the sustainable intensification of food production, broadly defined as "...
متن کاملUsing Life-cycle Assessment for Sustainable Consumption
The 2002 World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg called for a comprehensive set of programs focusing on sustainable consumption and production. According to world leaders, these programs should rely on life cycle analysis (LCA) to promote sustainable patterns of production and consumption. Cleaner production is a wellestablished activity and it uses LCA. UNEP, the European Unio...
